November 8 is Indigenous Veterans Day, a day to honour and remember all Indigenous Veterans who have served and continue to serve our country.
Indigenous Veterans have a rich history of military service, estimating that as many as 12,000 First Nations, Métis, and Inuit people served in World War I, World War II, and the Korean War.
Today, Indigenous Peoples continue to serve in the Canadian Armed Forces and worldwide. We thank them for their service, contributions, courage, and sacrifice.
There are several monuments throughout Canada that honour and recognize Indigenous Veterans’ contributions and service:
- National Aboriginal Veterans Monument, Ottawa, ON
- Sergeant Tommy Prince Memorial, Winnipeg, MB
- Nipissing First Nation Cenotaph, Garden Village, ON
- Francis Pegahmagabow Monument, Parry Sound, ON
