Congratulations to Babcock Canada’s Richard Hristovski, Deputy Chief Engineer, who has been named winner of this month’s Group Safety Star award!
Richard was committed to continually assessing and controlling risks before setting to work. At the start of each shift, he briefed crew members about maintenance work to be carried out in the hangar, which required using a boom lift for overhead crane inspections and work on light fixtures.
Richard spoke with the maintenance works supervisor at ground level and assured them that no one would be allowed to cross underneath the elevated work platform. He arranged to put a physical barrier in place by extending a retractable barricade between work areas so anyone passing would be forced to walk around the elevated platform. This barrier proved to be the right course of action when, later that day, a hand tool fell 60 feet from the platform to the ground. Thanks to Richard’s forethought, nobody was injured!
Richard was supervising a group of new apprentices at the time. He provided an excellent example of visible safety leadership by demonstrating his Safety Starts with Me attitude to the Home Safe commitments we must always fulfill as we strive for excellence, every day to create a safe and secure world, together.
