Today is Military Family Appreciation Day, a day to honour and celebrate the families of veterans and active Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) members. Natasha is a military family member part of our Babcock community. We asked Natasha to share what this day means to her and how her life has been influenced as part of a military family.
Natasha has a strong military family background and firsthand military experience, having served as a Navy reservist until 2022. Her connection to the military community continues through her husband, who currently serves in the Royal Canadian Navy as a Marine Systems Engineer.
From her experience being a member of a military family, Natasha discussed some of the challenges she has faced over the years:
“The uncertainty of military schedules, long absences, and balancing family responsibilities while my husband is away have always been a challenge.”
With these challenges, Natasha has gained many resources, strategies, and support systems over the years that have helped her navigate them.
“Having flexibility in my work schedule at Babcock has been incredibly helpful. It’s allowed me to manage family responsibilities during deployments and schedule changes. I’ve also built a strong support network and learned to be adaptable.”
A strong support system is something that Natasha explains is crucial to have when navigating the military family lifestyle. Part of the support system Natasha relies on includes her submariner military family community:
“The military community is very important to my family, but the submariner community holds a particularly special place in our lives. Submariner families face unique challenges, including long periods with limited communication and frequent absences, which creates a strong sense of understanding and connection among us. The support and friendships within the submariner community are invaluable.”
Through the years, Natasha has found that being a military family member has made her more resilient, adaptable, and independent, while also deepening her appreciation for the military community.
Something that Natasha wishes people outside the military community understood is that military service impacts the entire family:
“While we are proud of our loved ones’ service, military families also make sacrifices and adapt constantly behind the scenes.”
As someone with years of experience navigating the military family lifestyle, Natasha shares her advice for new military families.
“Be flexible, build a support network, and take advantage of available resources.”
