International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples

August 9, marks International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples. Across the business, we are working to support Indigenous communities through workforce inclusion, skills development, and business partnerships.

As a corporate citizen doing business within Canada and operating in several Indigenous traditional territories and homelands, Babcock is committed to building meaningful and mutually beneficial relations with Indigenous Peoples, communities, and businesses. Across all our lines of work, Babcock strives to recognize and include the culture, heritage, and achievements of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis Peoples every day, year-round.

Partnership Accreditation in Indigenous Relations Certification:

In 2020, Babcock was proud to enter the Canadian Council for Indigenous Businesses’ Partnership Accreditation in Indigenous Relations (PAIR) certification program. The PAIR framework not only guides the development of our policies and programs, but also serves as a truth and reconciliation framework for Babcock to maximize Indigenous participation within our operations.

Since engaging with the CCIB, we have been working closely with them to obtain feedback and have taken steps to build a strong Indigenous Relations strategy.

On April 1, 2025, we were delighted to submit our application for Bronze level certification. Shortly after in May, we underwent a verification meeting with a CCIB evaluator. Babcock looks forward to hearing about our results in early fall.

Building Meaningful and Mutually Beneficial Relationships:

To establish and maintain long term and positive working relationships with Indigenous Peoples, communities, and businesses, Babcock is guided by three principles of engagement:

This spring, we were thrilled to have 85% of our staff complete a new training course from First Nations University, Nisitohtamowin ᓂᓯᑐᐦᑕᒧᐃᐧᐣ An Introduction to Understanding Indigenous Perspectives in Canada. Moving forward, all new hires at Babcock Canada will be required to complete this training during their onboarding.

Supporting the Next Generation and Workforce Development:

At Babcock, we take great pride in supporting the next generation.

In 2023, we committed to annually invest $150,000 into Indigenous skills development training. As part of this commitment, we proudly made several $5,000 donations to Indigenous students in STEM at the University of British Columbia, British Columbia Institute of Technology, Camosun College, Red River College, and Algonquin College.

This year’s Babcock International Award for Indigenous Aircraft Maintenance Engineering Students at Red River College Polytech in Manitoba went to Brennen!

This annual award is presented to an Indigenous student who demonstrates exemplary academic progress and has successfully completed the second term of the Aircraft Maintenance Engineer program.

Congratulations Brennen!

We were also honoured to donate an additional $3,500 to the Verna J Kirkness Education Foundation. Babcock’s donation will help put two students through their program.

Supporting the Communities in Which we Live and Work:

Babcock was delighted to support and attend several community events this year:

Across Canada, members from our team were proud to wear a Moose Hide pin on May 15 to bring awareness to the rising levels of domestic violence and show our solidarity and commitment to honouring, respecting, and protecting the women and children in our lives.

In British Columbia, on September 30, 2024, Babcock was thrilled to sponsor and attend the Songhees Nation’s South Island Powwow. Through song and dance, the annual Powwow is an opportunity to recognize survivors and their families in the spirit of reconciliation.

We look forward to returning in 2025.

In Manitoba, we were delighted to attend and support the Northern Manitoba Trapper’s Festival in The Pas. Hosted on Treaty 5 Territory, this annual event celebrates the rich culture and history of the northern pioneer, Métis, and First Nations through their world championship dog races, King & Queen Trapper events, an arts and crafts show, snow sculpting, logger events, and more.
