Babcock teams with TMA for launch of student marketing competition

Over the course of three days in March, students from the University of Ottawa, took part in the inaugural ‘Pitch Your Brand’ marketing competition. Organized by the Telfer Marketing Association and with the support of industry partners Babcock and The Social Enterprise, the event is designed to help students gain experience and apply their classroom knowledge to real-world marketing challenges that companies face in an ever evolving and noise filled media landscape.

Bringing students closer to the business community

The competition attracted teams of students from across several disciplines and faculties, who were all eager to tackle the marketing case challenges developed by each of the industry partners. Once assigned their respective cases, from either Babcock or The Social Enterprise, the teams were given access to facilities on campus to work and develop their solutions. In teams of three, the students had to analyze and interpret a complex business case and create a comprehensive business plan complete with a 15 minute Power Point presentation. Their presentations had to accurately address the businesses’ core problem and develop a realistic plan that would help the company resolve their issue.

Throughout the event, volunteers from Babcock were on hand to help mentor the students, act as advisors and participate as panel judges.

“Competitions like the TMA Pitch Your Brand marketing competition provide students with opportunities to further develop valuable time management, research, and presentation skills to help them stand out in today’s competitive workforce. These are some of the key skills that Babcock looks for when recruiting business students for our co-op programs.”

On the final day of competition, all the participants gathered at the National Arts Centre and the student teams faced off and ‘pitched’ their proposals to panels of judges from each of the sponsor organizations. At the end of the first round, each panel of judges selected a winning team of students based on the strength of their proposals and the students’ presentations skills.

Winning teams from the first round of competition then went on to present before a panel of judges made up of Telfer Alumni and university faculty members, who then selected an overall winner of the ‘Pitch Your Brand’ marketing competition.
